An article in the fall 2007 issue of Capital Acumen published by US Trust gives us some numbers to think about. For the past 450 years the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has stayed below 290 parts per million (ppm). Today largely due to the combustion of fossil fuels, CO2 levels have climbed pat 380 ppm. These levels might go to 800 ppm by the end of the century. The cost of inaction on this growth might be 5% of world GNP. With just 5% of the world's population, the US is responsible for 25% of global GHG emissions. By 2025 per capita emssions in China are projected to be 1/4 of the US, India 1/14 of the US.-ed
