Puddles Weblog - Edited by Thomas Hollyday - Author and Illustrator

Puddles Weblog is a free clearing house for fundraising events to help animals. Send in your notice to puddles@solarsippers.com. The weblog also includes news about sources of fresh drinking water and about the loss of habitat for animals as well as reviews of fiction and illustrations with animal subjects. Feel free to participate. The editor notes however that Puddles Weblog is not responsible for the accuracy of any fund raising listing and suggests that fund contributors satisfy themselves that their donated funds will definitely be used to help animals.

animals

I just finished reading the article by Karen Springen in Newsweek Jan 11 2008. Her point is that having companion animals around can really help with stress. Apparently this is not true if you have allergies but even there some steps can be taken. The important thing about an article like this is that it gains respect for animals and helps to make sure they are protected.

birding blog

I so much enjoyed looking over http://www.10000birds.com/ which strives as a blog to look at and get reports on all the bird types in the world. It's a great challenge and a good way to do it. I looked at some of the reports and was especially impressed with the osprey section. Take a look. -ed

hugh lofting

On January 14 we celebrate the anniversary of the birth of Hugh Lofting who wrote the series of books we all love, the stories of Doctor Dolittle.Believe it or not, Lofting first wrote the stories in his letters from the front while he served in the British Army during World War One.Probably no single author has done as much as Lofting in bringing the fate of animals to the minds of all of us. This year, read aloud to each other a copy of The Story of Doctor Dolittle in Lofting's memory.

solar living

I was pleasantly surprised to read the description of the Solstice celebration by the Solar Living Institute Center staff on December 21 2007. The main building of the Institute was constructed to be a temple to the sun and the staff was able to see the winter solstice sun set directly over the local mountain, Duncan Peak. The sun set directly in a notch of the mountain. The staff then beat drums and otherwise celebrated the occasion in a similar way to human ancestors thousands of years ago who also praised the sun. Join them at sli@solarliving.org.
